I was not required to publish at UH as an instructional faculty member. However, I liked to write, and library administration encouraged me to do so.

I had two very good mentors who greatly improved my skill. Helen Rogers, a colleague at UH-Hilo, showed me how to phrase things better and eliminate redundancy.

My thesis advisor Kenneth Rehg taught me better ways to shape academic and linguistic argumentation and to present data.
