Few travel guides include accommodations, restaurants, and activities of interest to gay and lesbian readers. Link makes one of the world's top travel destinations accessible by writing an engaging narrative of the history and culture of Hawaii from a gay perspective. Fortunately, he goes far beyond listing the usual hotels, bars, and dance venues and encourages his readers to explore off-the-beaten-track areas. Though Oahu is by far the most popular island, he gives equal time to the other islands. Included are sidebar interviews with local men and women: artists, community activists, educators, and surfing instructors, each giving his or her perspective of local gay life. Link provides important information to visitors on how to fit into "local style" in his "Island Manners" section. An essential purchase for public libraries' travel sections, as well as gay and lesbian collections.
